NAVIGATING THE HOTbox: Comprehensive Encaustic Monotype and Paper
June 16, 2020
Paula Roland's Studio
Santa Fe | June 16-19, 2020
With this comprehensive introductory class you will leave with an armload of prints, fully inspired, with confidence to continue on your own!
Encaustic monotype prints are a versatile way of working in encaustic where the wax becomes one with the paper, making this encaustic easy to handle, ship, or store. Alternate approaches to use of the Roland HOTbox will be covered, including surface drawing with heat and wax, scrolls, and free-hanging paper images.
We will cover mark-making as well as print in layers to create depth, mystery and light. To print, we draw and paint with encaustic on the Roland HOTbox™ (which melts the wax) and then transfer the image to paper without using a press.
Once the intrinsic nature of the process is understood, we can create finished pieces, add other media, or work in formats including scrolls, print installations, mounted and unmounted painted prints, and much more. The possibilities are limitless!
Not just about technique, this class will help advance your works in all mediums. It is a comprehensive overview of encaustic monotypes and a refresher for better composition and relationship of work to intention.
Also covered: Mounting prints to boards, presentation options for framing and for display of free-hanging paper.
FORMAT: Demonstrations are interspersed with ample studio work time, discussion, and critique. Class limited to 8.
SKILLS NEEDED: Open to artists at all levels with basic knowledge of color and composition. No prior experience with encaustic or printmaking is needed! If you have done monotypes before, but not studied with Paula, this is still the best class for you.
