In this workshop, we will cover the basics of Encaustic in both painting and monotype and, and guided by fun exercises, use the monotypes to generate ideas for composition in our paintings. There will also be plenty of work time for you to explore your own ideas in wax.

With encaustic painting, we cover safe practices, grounds and substrates, fusing with a torch, lamp, and a heat gun. Further topics: translucency, glazing, texture, smooth surfaces, layering, scribing, excavating, wax and oil stick,  stencils, image transfers and more.

With encaustic monotype printing, we cover: Ways to navigate the Roland HOTbox and use it effectively. We will cover tools, techniques and approaches, including additive and subtractive ways of working and aim for a balance of spontaneity and structure in the work. We gain experience with a range of papers, and each with their own quirks and peculiarities. We will create layered “passes” for depth, translucency, and blended color and will learn the interdependent variables (temperature, wax, paper, pigment load).

In summary, this workshop :
