Event Location:

A more in-depth version of this workshop is offered March 12-15, focusing on building composition.
This short workshop is designed to give you a “taste” of two methods of working with encaustic– encaustic monotype printmaking and encaustic painting. This workshop won’t make you an expert in either, but it is a fun way to be introduced!
The methods are very different. Painting involves melting encaustic (pigmented beeswax) and applying it to a wood board with a brush. Each layer of paint will need to be re-heated (fused) to the layer beneath. Layers can be “excavated” with a scraping tool to reveal what’s beneath. We will learn to create texture and translucency, inscribe lines, and add transparent oil paint to shift the color, among other techniques.
Encaustic monotype is a one-of-a-kind print. We will use the Roland HOTbox, which I developed. It consists of an insulated wooden box with an anodized aluminum plate on top. The source of heat is inside–four 100 watt light bulbs! These heat the plate. The encaustic paint is used in cold, solid, stick form. One draws upon the heated plate and the colored wax melts instantly. It can then be manipulated with tools until a desired image is formed. To print the image, a sheet of absorbent art paper is laid on top. The wax image is absorbed and becomes one with the paper. It’s fun and fast–almost magical, and one can create many pieces in a short time. There is much more to learn about this mercurial method but you will get a good start!
With all encaustic workshops we cover safe practices and ways to preserve and display your creatiions.
Experience is not required. Watching Paula’s 2 ½ hour Instructional DVD ENCAUSTIC MONOTYPE: Painterly Prints with Heat and Wax, will give you a jump start for this workshop. (order here).
FORMAT: Demonstrations are interspersed with studio work time, Q & A, and discussions. Class limited to 8. 10AM- 4PM daily.
SUPPLIES: All supplies are provided. Inquire about ordering a Roland HOTbox™ or adding a self-guided workday in the studio following the workshop, to exercise your new skills. Paula’s Instructional DVD Can help you prepare or review skills.
